Press Statement: CFI Supports Police Commitment to Enforcement of Law and Order in the 2012 ElectionsThe IDEG/CFI - on May 14, 2012 - issued a press statement, in support of the Police’ commitment to enforcement of law and order in the December 2012 elections. The statement comes on the heels of an earlier statement issued by the group on April 18, 2012 on the “Current Political Situation in Ghana” which called on stakeholders particularly the Ghana Police Service to take all necessary measures to insulate the service against political pressures that tend to undermine their professionalism and impartiality. The statement is also in response to the IGP’s statement on April 25, 2012 in which he addressed a broad range of issues among which were elections, Police neutrality and assurances to the public. Press Statement on the Current Political Situation in Ghana
The Civic Forum Initiative (CFI) as part of its objective to ensuring credible elections, peace and national cohesion before, during and after the December 2012 elections in Ghana, organized a Press Conference on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the Auditorium of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) to comment on recent political developments in the country. The statement highlighted the need for all stakeholders to respect the autonomy and integrity of the Police and support the Service against political pressures that may undermine their professionalism and impartiality. IDEG Commemorates International Day of Tolerance as part of the State of the Union (SOTU) ProjectIn 2012, Ghana will be organizing its sixth consecutive Presidential and Parliamentary elections since the return to democratic rule under the Fourth Republic. Despite Ghana’s record of conducting successful elections, multi-party elections apart from being a contest for political power, have in recent times often brought about intimidation and violence never before witnessed in the politics of the country. Electioneering campaign has become synonymous to violence, leaving in its wake a lot of unresolved electoral disputes. Events prior to, during and after the 2008 elections such as arson attacks in Gushiegu, violence in Akwatia, the killing of supporters of both the NPP and NDC in the Agbogbloshie disturbances during the 2009 transitions are some of the notable incidents. This situation has largely contributed to the increasing culture of intolerance and impunity among supporters of political parties. |
